Please excuse me while I slip into a food coma

I’d like to thank Chicago Restaurant Week and Sable for this amazing lunchtime experience today. Three courses for $22 – can’t beat it!

Pictured: Sable’s dark chocolate souffle cake with peanut butter sauce and salted caramel ice cream. Oh yes – it was just as good as it looks.

February Photo a Day: Where you work

This is a view of the agency where I work from inside my office.

One of the perks of working at an ad agency is that people roll in pretty much whenever they want in the morning. The place was still a ghost town at 10 am.

Check out these other ad agency perks. Jealous? ๐Ÿ™‚

P.S. This was actually supposed to be yesterday’s photo. Today’s photo is “my shoes,” but since we’re supposed to get rain/snow today, I wore my Hunter boots, which I’ve already proudly displayed for you here and here. Wouldn’t want you to get sick of them!

Birthday loot

Since birthdays often don’t often involve the gathering of friends and family like Christmas or Thanksgiving (because who has time for that??), the best thing about them is the presents. And the Facebook messages are nice too.

Yesterday, I turned 30. (Insert sands of time in an hour glass metaphor here.) I celebrated with Will last night, and boy did I clean up!

Will was smart enough to stop by my favorite store and got me some Jonathan Adler bottle stoppers and a cool “wine breather” that decants wine – instantly!

Both gifts were very thoughtful because I have been known to enjoy a glass of wine every day now and then. Also, I was just complaining a few weeks ago that we didn’t have any good bottle stoppers (look at Will taking mental notes!), and I like to “decant” my wine before drinking itย (basically I just pour it in a glass and let it sit for awhile) because two-buck Chuck from Trader Joe’s actually does taste better that way.

We continued the celebration of my awesome life by drinking sparkling wine (natch) and going out to dinner at Riccardo Trattoria, which was delicious (just ask Gwyneth)!

I even tried curling my hair for the occasion and was marginally successful.

All in all, a great 30th birthday! Thanks to everyone who made me feel special!

Photo shoot

I’ll tell you the same thing I tell everyone else who asks: No, I am not a model.

Just kidding. No one ever asks me that. And now you can see why.

But Will’s mom was nice enough to buy us a professional photo shoot in St. Louis, so we decided to take advantage of it in Forest Park on one of the most beautiful fall days ever.

And yes, I know only weird people have professional photos taken with their pets. Awkward Family Pet Photos, anyone? We are officially those people.

P.S. I miss fall.

February Photo a Day: Heart

Today’s photo challenge is quite appropriate since it is, in fact, Valentine’s Day. Or as Will likes to call it, Tuesday.

But just because my husband hates all days of the year in which he is expected to put forth any extra degree of thoughtfulness and effort (don’t worry, he has many other redeeming qualities – THANK GOD), that doesn’t mean that I have to completely ignore the holiday.

So in honor of VD (Valentine’s Day, that is), I surprised Will with heart-shaped Dunkin’ Donuts and coffee this morning. And I’m wearing my red jeans. Because if you happen to be the owner of bright red pants, how can you not wear them on Valentine’s Day?

February Photo a Day: Catching up

Since I forgot to post yesterday, you get two photos today!

Yesterday’s photo: Makes me happy

I finally have the third Hunger Games book in my possession! (Thanks to my sister who lent it to me.) I read the first book over the summer, so it’s about time I find out how this whole thing ends.

Today’s photo: Inside my closet

Uggh. My closet is actually bigger than it looks here, but my clothes are still crammed in there pretty good. The idea of a walk-in closet is almost tempting enough to consider a move to the suburbs. Almost…

Lazy weekend

Yes, Will and I had a “game night” last weekend. We made this for dinner and played Monopoly.

Who won, you ask? Didn’t you see the blimp and sky-writing planes Will hired to broadcast his victory to the world because he’s so super humble? No?

Will also started teaching me how to play Risk, but my sleepiness/wine drinking/ADHD/lack of intelligence kicked in and shut my brain off before we actually got started.

And yesterday, we had a very small Super Bowl Puppy Bowl gathering at our apartment. It was really just an excuse for me to drink mimosas, which I realize is not a typical Super Bowl beverage, but I don’t care so you shut your mouth.

I’d say the crowning achievement of my weekend was successfully executing this recipe for mango avocado salsa. Even without the cilantro (Trader Joe’s was out) and the habanero chile (I don’t do spicy), it was really quite tasty, if I do say so myself.

Well done, Thursday

To steal a Facebook status update from one of my co-workers:

“Yellowcard is playing in my office. And we got free cookies and beer.”

So basically I stopped working at 3 pm this afternoon. AND I’m getting a much-needed haircut tonight. AND the salon where I get my hair cut is across the street from my favorite store. AND they are having an awesome sale right now.

So today is a good day.

Who is Yellowcard, you ask? You might recognize this:

Yes?
